SAVE SIR JOHN MAXWELL SCHOOL
A number of attempts have been made to to have the Sir John Maxwell building saved for posterity, including in:
November 2016
Attempt led by Stewart McDonald SNP MP to have the building granted listed status – as part of a concern for the wider built heritage of the city’s southside.
July 2018
Facebook Page Created. To date it has received 390 likes.
An on-line petition was launched. It was signed by 261 people.
August 2018
Representation made to the City’s Community Empowerment Committee. Councillors backed proposals to work with community representatives.
The chairman of the Community Empowerment Committee is reported as having said:
“I think we have to make every effort to maintain that building given the history of the Maxwell family, what they did for this city and why we named it after them.
“At the very least we could make this building secure and charge any working group that comes of this to find the money to make it wind and watertight and thereafter find a use for it.”

Playground Clean up Day 1 & 2
Volunteers begin clearing vegetation from the school playgrounds. Prior to the event, Glasgow City Council provided a cherry-picker and personnel to remove the plants growing on the building and in the gutters. The Council also provided ‘cages’ for the debris and removed them from the site.

Committee informed that its two small grant applications had been successful. This will allow an architect to be commissioned to undertake a 'condition survey' and to provide an estimate of the cost of making the building wind and watertight, safe and accessible. A condition of one of the grants was that further efforts should be made to have the building 'B ' listed.

Clearing work continues and woody trunks removed.

Filming of Promotional Video begins
Group granted access to interior of the building to begin filming a promotional video, both to widen community support for the campaign and to show to potential funding bodies. The video was to be produced by Dol Eoin McKinnon - acclaimed singer, song-writer and film maker.
The Covid-19 restrictions have caused the postponement of this venture, and curtailed plans for wider dissemination events.

In the light of Covid-19 restrictions, and following discussions with the Heritage Directorate of Historic Environment Scotland, planning of the processes for an on-line community engagement exercise commenced.

Work begun (a) to make more explicit the relationship of the group’s campaign to save the school building and the wider context of the cultural heritage of Pollokshaws and (b) to build related interactive functions.

Preliminary meeting with 'New Practice' to explore future action possibilities.

Email to supporters to maintain avenue of contact and keep them abreast of
on-going action.

Follow-up Zoom meeting with New Practice to formalise an action partnership.

The report will provide a foundation on which to build a community engagement action plan for 2021.
