Internally, the building is in a very poor condition. Due to long term water ingress and evidence of significant timber decay, the structural integrity of the building’s timber structure ( i.e. suspended ground and upper floors and roof structure), is a real concern. Only those areas of the building that are of solid construction, (stairs, some circulation areas and the upper floor gymnasium), are accessible with caution.
The bad news is that all soft finishes (plaster, lath and floor boards will need to be stripped back to a masonry shell before any re-building can take place. This will make any resultant repair work complex and expensive.
The good news is that that the survey concludes that, although there is no quick fix, this fine building is not beyond saving.
WITH THE WHOLE COMMUNITY BEHIND THE PROJECT THE BUILDING CAN STILL BE SAVED. IT'S NOT TOO LATE!!
